The Ohio ABCD Screening Academy Project tested standard general developmental and/or social-emotional screening tools in a few pilot practice sites to improve screening and referrals for identified care needs. Ohio integrated and supported existing initiatives and resources by including referrals to Ohio Help Me Grow and Title V Children with Special Health Care Needs programs. Ohio also supported the state AAP Chapter’s statewide spread efforts.
Specifically, the ABCD Screening Academy project in Ohio improved developmental screening by:
Improving state policy to better support developmental screening by increasing their fee-for-service 96110 and 96111 reimbursement rates July 1 to $10.32 and $51.01 from $8.49 and $42.51, respectively.
Improving provider practice around the use of standardized developmental screening tools by developing a plan by Ohio’s AAP Chapter to conduct physician education and training on general developmental and autism screening using the evidence-based screening tools Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) and The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) via a series of workshops with up to 100 practices; including both pediatricians and family medicine. Ohio completed a Developmental Screening Tools and Schedule recommendation and drafted a Physician Referral Tool Kit for Ohio AAP Chapter physicians’ feedback.
Sustaining and spreading the use of standardized screening tools as part of well child care from a ‘best practice’ to a ‘standard of practice’ through partnering with Ohio’s Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to apply for a multiple year Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant to improve autism and developmental screening and care through additional physician education and training.
