The Wisconsin ABCD Screening Academy Project planned built on existing initiatives and develop statewide training and technical assistance strategies to educate healthcare providers on the use of standardized developmental screening tools. Many of these plans were incorporated into the state-wide implementation of BadgerCare+, an effort to expand coverage by redesigning the state Medicaid program.
Specifically, the ABCD Screening Academy project in Wisconsin improved developmental screening by:
Improving state policy to better support developmental screening by addressing community collaboration questions around developmental screening.
Sustaining and spreading the use of standardized screening tools as part of well child care from a ‘best practice’ to a ‘standard of practice’ through developing a screening website, creating an inventory of what professionals are conducting developmental screening, and seeking ongoing funding opportunities such as the CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) Research Topic of Interest (RTOI) grant which provides assistance to train family physicians in Developmental Screening.
